The 20th century witnessed a significant escalation in industrial activities, characterized by expanded factory operations, widespread deforestation, particularly for paper production, and rising levels of environmental pollution. The global failure of major economies, including the United States, to commit to meaningful reductions in industrial emissions has played a substantial role in exacerbating the climate crisis. Within this context, Green Information Technology (GIT), which promotes the environmentally responsible use of IT resources, has emerged as an increasingly important area of focus. This study seeks to assess the maturity level of GIT implementation within Iranian banks. Using a descriptive and applied research approach, data were gathered through a structured questionnaire administered to IT professionals and managers across 30 banks. The findings reveal that the Iranian banking sector currently operates at level three of the GIT maturity model. Moreover, managerial characteristics, such as educational background and academic field, appear to significantly influence the advancement of GIT initiatives. Private banks were found to be further along in implementing GIT compared to their public counterparts. While GIT practices contribute positively to environmental performance, the study highlights the need for more deliberate strategic planning and integration to fully harness their potential. This research represents one of the first efforts to explore the intersection of information technology and environmental sustainability in Iran’s banking industry.
